street life

street life

One big difference between India and Canada is street life. There are a lot of people in India and a lot of them spend time out on the street, eating (there are food stalls all along the sidewalk on the left), shopping, going to temples, walking and generally interacting with other people. The streets themselves are a destination. In Canada, streets are for cars, not people and shops are indoors, so the streets (or sidewalks) are not themselves a destination. It might be down to the fact that cold weather in Canada prevents people from spending time outside for a large part of the year. Whatever the reason, the lack of a "third place" and street life is one of the things I really dislike about Canada. The Brits have cold weather too, but at least they have pubs. We don't even have that; pubs here are really bars with a fake British theme.
